Trustee’s Update
ARCs and PARTs.
At the last meeting of the Board of Trustees there were a series of school reviews (ARC) put in place – 10 in total. None in Ward 10. There was no opportunity to vote on the ARCs at the board meeting; they became part of what is called a consent agenda – not enough other trustees asked to have them held for discussion and vote so they automatically passed.
Why were none established in Ward 10, especially as I am always regaled for having many vacant student spaces? I have asked that Ward 10 be allowed to follow its own process for discussions. This will include discussions at the Ward Council and at the schools regarding programming needs. The place this will be evident will be a Program Area Review Team (PART) in French for the ward; this will happen soon. We have not fully addressed the French Immersion and Extended French issues in the ward and need to have a formal discussion – a PART.
Pools:
In Ward 10 there were 8 operating pools in schools or connected to school properties. Only 3 are scheduled to remain open. Of the 8: Scadding Court, Beverley Street, Harbord, Kensington, 2 at Central Tech, Central Commerce and Bickford Centre, only the first three are scheduled to remain open. The two that are possible to save are Kensington and one at Central Tech. The pools at the TDSB have been given over to the property company of the TDSB – The Toronto Lands Corporation. As a result the staff of the TDSB proper no longer feel they should work on saving the pools – it has become the work of ourselves. We are making efforts to keep these pools open, but need your help as well. We need people to spread the word that organizations can obtain permits to use the pools in the ward. Pools need to be seen as part of the community.
Any ideas, please write or call.
