A Ward 10 School Safety Committee
· 24 January 2007, 03:36
At last night’s meeting, we voted on the formation of Safety Committee for Ward 10. The focus of the committee would be to share resources, help resolve issues, and explore better ways to make our schools safer for everyone.
Safety cover the gamut from addressing dogs in the yard to lock downs to bullying. This discussion area is for the new committee to start exchanging ideas. Once it has more structure, the committee would have its own section on this site.
We invite everyone interested in School Safety issues to share in this forum.

Hi everyone, I am going to encourage those in our school who form this year’s safety committee to be in touch across the ward with parents and community members who may have insights into the ‘lock all doors’ phenomenon, the role of school beautification in safety concerns, and anything else that comes up. Our school is small (Niagara) so we often feel we’re in a bit of a vacuum and now that we have a brand new principal it seems an opportune moment to discuss our ‘safety philosophy’ – so others’ viewpoints will be appreciated.
First question: is locking all doors during the day the only option to assuage concerns about our children’s safety? what is the experience with setting up human monitoring – do parents willingly volunteer? are any schools offering workshops in safety culture and techniques? what are your experiences with consultating the school community on safety issues?
thanks
